I'm in love..

With a purse.  Is that weird?  If so, I don't care.  I just got this beauty today, and I am not going to put it down once all Spring or Summer.

It immediately came to church with me, and I already love how it instantly makes a plain jane dress look so special!

It coordinates perfectly with my favorite nude pumps, too.  And I love that the color is neutral enough that it will truly go with anything.

By the way, do you HATE pantyhose like I do (hate hate hate) but still feel uncomfortable going bare legged to church or formal meetings?  This winter I discovered patterned nude tights.  I have two pairs of swiss dotted, and this pair which is a subtle lace pattern.  It really makes having to have something on my legs a little more tolerable!

Dress:  JCrew.  Tights: Target.  Purse:  Big Buddha Mia.  Shoes:  Target.

Samoa Cupcakes

I have a deep-rooted obsession with Samoa Girl Scout cookies.  They are, in my opinion, the king of all cookies, particularly when frozen...oh yum.

Well, about two weeks ago, MrsJoeC posted this picture, and I knew I needed to have a Samoa cupcake.

And so, I made some.  Maybe my friends are rotten liars, but they all said they loved them, and I definitely did not have two for breakfast this morning.  Caramel-y, chocolate-y, coconut-y deliciousness.

Samoa Cupcakes

Samoa Cupcakes - recipe from here.

For the cupcakes:
1 box yellow butter cake mix
1 cup water
3 eggs
1 stick butter, softened
Caramel Sauce
For the chocolate ganache:
8 ounces semisweet roughly chopped baker's chocolate
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
For the toasted coconut topping:
4 cups shredded, sweet coconut
2 eggs
10 ounces evaporated milk
11/3 cup sugar
1 stick butter

Prepare the cupcake batter according to the box mix directions. Fill each cupcake liner a little more than halfway with the batter and top with a spoonful of caramel sauce. Bake according to the directions on the box. Let cupcakes cool completely before frosting.
To make chocolate ganache, stir cream and chocolate chips on a double boiler (or use a metal bowl on top of a saucepan of boiling water) until melted. Add vanilla and stir to mix. Let cool to room temperature.
To make the toasted coconut topping, start by spreading the coconut onto a sheet pan. Toast in a 350°F oven, stirring frequently to prevent burning, until the coconut is an even brown color, about 10 minutes. Crack the eggs into a small saucepan and beat lightly to break up. Add milk, sugar, and butter. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until thick, bubbly, and golden, about 15 minutes. Press mixture through a metal sieve and into a bowl to remove any lumps. Add 3 cups of the coconut, reserving the remainder for assembly, stir to combine. Let the mixture cool.

To assemble, smooth on a light coating of chocolate ganache. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes to harden the ganache.

Once hardened, spoon on the coconut topping and spread evenly. Top with some more plain toasted coconut.

Drizzle the top with lines of ganache. You may have to warm the ganache over a water bath to get it to drizzling consistency.

Getting to Know You Sunday

Another Sunday Funday - Getting To Know you with Mannland5!

1 - Why did you start blogging?
I'd been reading blogs for years, and they were so much fun for me!  I started mine to originally be mostly about the house and as we fixed it up, but lately I write more about shopping :)

2 - Who's the one blog friend that you would want to meet most in "real life"?
Anyone on my Google Reader - I love meeting new people, and if anyone is ever in the DC area, I'd love to grab a coffee or a beer!

3 - Why are you always concerned with losing that "extra 10 pounds" when chances are your husband/boyfriend/friends tell you that you look just fine the way you are?

Confidence is everything, as a woman.  The littlest thing can throw me off, and I know that I really need to feel awesome all around in order to be successful personally, professionally and emotionally.  Being content with my weight and my appearance ties into that confidence - for me.

4 - What's the one thing you wish guys could understand about you?

This isn't directed just at my husband, as I have several friends dealing with the same thing - romance shouldn't stop when you're engaged/married!  It takes the littlest effort to say "I love you" or write a sweet note...give a compliment or pick up flowers!  It means the WORLD to women, and I don't know why they don't get that!

5 - Tattoos. How many do you have and how many are visible when you wear your "everyday" clothes?

I have two, one on the inside of my stomach/hip, and one along my ribs.  You can't see either in work attire, but you can see  both in a bikini.  I'm probably going to get some more work done on my ribs this summer.

6 - What was the best year of your life and why?

End of 2008/beginning of 2009.  Once Tyler and I got into a routine after being married, it was awesome - we have SO much fun together, and back then our work schedules and everything meshed perfectly.  This year has been really rough with never seeing Tyler, and some personal things that we are working and praying through, so I'm hoping that 2010 turns around soon - it has the potential to be the best year ever :)

7 - Name three things you would do if you were a man for one day?

Umm, pee?  Which would happen at least once in a day anyway.  No clue, I'm perfectly content being a woman!

8 - What's your alcoholic drink of choice that usually raises a few eyebrows?

Bourbon, neat.  Which I need to stop drinking, it usually results in me having a little too much fun!

Wishful Wednesday - Chanel!

'I wish' .... I could afford a classic quilted Chanel without putting a dent in my pocketbook!

While I used to be just a shoe girl, I've recently gotten more into bags - starting with my beloved Marc Jacobs croc clutch, and currently about to buy the LV Neverfull MM.  But, I think $1K would be my limit for a purse, thus putting Chanel forever out of reach.  So, if opportunity ever arose...you'd better believe I'd be headed straight for Tysons Galleria to pick one out :)

Wedding Video

If you're married, and had a videographer, do you often watch your wedding video?  Tyler thinks its funny, but I always pull it out when he's working nights and I'm lonely and miss him horribly!  I love watching the whole thing, but even the trailer/preview is lovely.  It makes me cry every single time.

This was the best day of my life, hands down.

Edited to add:  Apparently this isn't showing in Google Reader - open my blog to view it :)

Top 2 Tuesdays - Things You Can't Live Without

Its Top 2 Tuesday with The Undomestic Momma, and today's theme is...

Top 2 Things You Can't Live Without

1.  My G1.
I am completely obsessed with my my Android G1 phone.  It is always within arms reach, and I love being able to check my email...and the weather...and google something...and get directions...etc.  I would die if this broke and I couldn't replace it immediately.

2.  Eyeliner.
I have been wearing Revlon Colorstay Blackest Black liquid eyeliner since highschool.  Every once in awhile I can't find it, and panic that it may be discontinued, and the next time I see it I buy everything they have.  Right now, I still have two new tubes in reserve.  The day I can't find it...I have no idea what I will do!  I don't leave the house without this stuff.  I even keep extras in my car and at work in case I need to touch up :)

Survey Monday

I stole this from Mr and Mrs Smith :)

How long have you been together?

Ten years.  Since we were 16 - for.ev.er.

How long did you know each other before you started dating?
Well, we celebrate our anniversary on the day we met, which is technically cheating I guess.  But we started hanging out immediately, except that I had a boyfriend.  When that relationship ended about a month later, Tyler and I became official.  You know, all that highschool stuff ;)

Are you from the same home town?
Yep, Fairfax County in northern VA.

Who is the smartest?
We both are.  Tyler is much better at math and science, and I'm much better at English and history.  We both actually enjoy reading the paper, watching history channels, learning about politics, etc.  Its definitely something that keeps our relationship great.

Who majored in what?
Tyler was an Information Technology major, and I was a Communications major.

Where do you eat out most as a couple?
We transition.  In highschool, we would only ever eat at Ruby Tuesdays.  Then, it was Rio Grande (still a top favorite!).  When we moved to Bristow, we became obsessed with Buffalo Wild Wings, but since Tyler quit drinking, we've been going out for sushi quite often.

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Washington state, to visit my friend Liz and her husband, Brett.

Where was your first date?
To Roy Rogers (he was fascinated that there was one near me) and then my high school football game.

Who has the bigger family?
Tyler does, but mine feels bigger because there are more people at each of my gatherings, since I'm blessed to have more local.

Do you get flowers often?
Nope!  Lets work on that, honey.

How do you spend the holidays?
Half a day with my family, half a day with his.  I LOVE our families, and we are so blessed to have great relationships with them, but I really hate holidays.  I find them exhausting, and I'd much rather spend them quietly at home with my husband.

Who is more jealous?
Neither.  We have a freakishly awesome relationship where we can talk about exes...someone cute we ran into...even a risque dream.  Neither of us give a darn, we know that we're it for each other.

How long did it take to get serious?
I guess a year or so, but then it waned a bit in college, and we took a break.  When we got back together though, it was very serious, and we moved in together 3 months later.

Who eats more?
This is embarrassing, but me.  He weighs double what I do, and I still can put away way more at dinner, and have room for dessert.  I'm sure he eats more often, but whenever we go out to dinner, I feel like such a pig.

What do you do for a living?
He is a government contractor working with computers.  Thats about all I know, its different every day for him.  I am a government contractor developing training for various agencies and the military.

Who does the laundry?
Me.

Who’s better with the computer?
Tyler, hands down.  Does anyone watch Modern Family?  This clip is like a metaphor for Tyler and I and everything technical, from computers to the TV:

Who drives when you are together?
Always Tyler.

What is "your" song?
Incubus, "I Miss You" was our first.  And I guarantee that Tyler could not have told you that, but will agree and say "oh yea!".  But we have coordinating tattoos from Leatherface's "Not a Day Goes By". ((You can see pictures here))   And Plain White T's "Hey There, Delilah" will always make me think of Tyler, because he used to sing it to me.  Oh, and every single song by Dashboard Confessional...New Found Glory...the Ataris...Saves the Day...our bands.

Who is the oldest?
Tyler, by two months.

Dog or cat people?
Dogs.  We are creepily obsessed with them.  We can barely have a five minute conversation without telling each other something one of the pups did that day.

Who cooks?
Lately, neither of us.  Tyler works nights.  But when he is home, I usually do, but can occasionally convince him to chip in, if I have a recipe for him to follow.

Happy weather, happy life

Another gorgeous sunny Sunday is the DC metro area.  I am SO AMPED for warm weather again!

Tyler and I had the most amazing day.  We went to hang out with his parents, who were babysitting our nephews and niece.  They are definitely my favorite kids - I love being able to just chat and goof around with the boys, and sweet Ava loves to be held and just look around at everything going on.  I cannot wait to give them a few cousins ;)

After that, Tyler and I headed out to Rio Grande.  It was so nice out, we got a patio table, and I indulged in some super yummy swirls.  It was the first time we'd gotten to have some alone time and adult conversation in awhile, and I savored every second.  When we got home, we took the dogs on a really long walk, then curled up on the couch to watch New Moon.  Tyler was miserable for two hours, but I enjoyed every second, and cannot WAIT for Eclipse to come out.

All in all, I could not have planned a more perfect Sunday :)  And it gave me an excuse to break out a fun summer dress!  My mother in law gave me this bag, and I love the muted gold color - I think it will be the perfect neutral summer bag.

I got the dress at Target for $15 in Navy and black, and might have to scoop a few more colors.  I love easy cotton dresses for warm weather, and just add a necklace and sandals, and instant casual elegance.  By the end of the night, my beachy waves were a bit messy, but I still like the way it looks - I straightened my hair pin straight for years, I don't know why I didn't start curling it sooner.

And, my newest pair of ShoeDazzle shoes.  They were super comfortable, and I think they'll be the perfect neutral wedge to get me until Fall, when I need to turn back to boots.

Getting To Know You

Another Sunday with MannLand5 and her Getting to Know You questions!

1. What year did you graduate high school?
2002.

2. What part of your body do you neglect the most?
Eyes.  I am SO hard on them.  I always sleep in my contacts, almost never wear my glasses, and maybe go to the eye doctor every two years.  So bad, I know.

3. Beach house or lake house?
Beach house!  I adore being down at the Outer Banks

4. Mac or PC?
PC.

5. Did you wear braces?
No but I really should have them.  My teeth get more crooked by the day.

6. If you could be one person for a day..living or deceased..who would you be?
No kidding, I would LOVE to be my dog for a day.  I'm dying of curiosity what its like for them to live with Tyler and I.

7. How many times have you moved in your life?
From my parent's house to the dorms at George Mason.  Then off campus with some sorority sisters, then into a townhouse with some friends, then in with Tyler into an apartment, and then this home - our likely forever home.

8. Would you rather cook or clean?
Cook, I HATE cleaning.

Oh, Datsun.

Tyler has been looking for new hobbies recently, and he and his friend Joe decided to get a truck.  Not just any truck - a 1978 Datsun pick up.  It doesn't run, but thats okay, because it was only $400!  I was skeptical of their plan to purchase and fix it up, but I stayed quiet.

Well, yesterday, they finally picked it up.

It is everything I imagined, and worse.

If you can see in the background, I live in your perfect suburbia - close neighbors, family atmosphere.  We got quite a few stares from the minivans driving by.  Thank god for a garage in which to hide it.

I see this project being a colossal failure.  In the meantime, there is nothing cuter than a sweaty, manly husband outside working on a car, so at least there is that ;)

Thoughts and Prayers

I touched earlier on the birth of my nephew, Drew.

Here is what I didn't get to tell you, and why I haven't posted much.

Drew Michael was born March 8th.  Everything is a bit of a blur for my sister, since she had complications with the C-section and had to go under general anesthesia.  The immediately recognized that he had a cleft palate and a recessed jaw, and rushed him off to NICU.

Throughout the next few days, everything was crazy.  Erin and her husband weren't getting any information from the nurses or staff, couldn't get a meeting with a doctor or case worker, and Erin didn't even get to hold her son. We finally went up to visit him, and a nurse said she couldn't hold him because he was sleeping.  You better believe aunt Kelly started poking at his feet to perk up, so his momma could have him in her arms!

After 3 or 4 days, they finally got a diagnosis - Pierre Robin sequence.  For him, this meant a cleft palate, micronagthia (an undersized jaw) and glosstopsis (an abnormal downward and back placement of the tongue).  He was on a feeding tube, but was able to take in breast milk through a Haberman Feeder.

He was transferred to the John Hopkins Medical Institute for testing and surgery. His preliminary results show he has failed his sleep study, although the final results won't be in until Monday. If he HAS failed, his team of specialists (Plastics, Opthamology, ENT, Genetics, Pulminology, Pediatrics, etc) will schedule him for a tongue-lip adhesion (yup, you heard right - they will sew his tongue to his lower lip) at that time.

If you are interested in learning more about PRS, here is one website you can check out: http://www.faces-cranio.org/Disord/PierreRobin.htm

Also, my sister has started a blog to chronicle their life, and at this time, focusing on Drew and his recovery.  You can visit her at Boy Crazy here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now is the part where I need your help.  In honor of Drew, and all babies born sick and with birth defects, my sister and I are walking in the March of Dimes:  March for Babies walk in Washington, DC on April 25th.

If any of you are local, I would LOVE to meet you, and love to have you join our team.  I'm making t-shirts...haha :)  You can sign up and learn more about everything here:  March for Babies.

If you could help make a donation, it would mean the world.  Even just $1 is one more that goes to all babies, and hoping that one day, no other mother has to go through this nightmare that we've been living.  Please share this link with your companies, your families, and your friends.  It is a wonderful organization, and they have already made a great difference.

Please visit here to make a donation.  And if you do, please tell me - so that I can thank you profusely, from the bottom of my heart.

And for my spiritual readers...please say an extra prayer for baby Drew tonight...who is about to turn 2 weeks old, and just needs to go home and be with his momma.

xoxo.

The sun is back!

This week has been GORGEOUS outside...I am so amped for spring!  Time for dresses and pretty skirts and camisoles and sandals and wedges...love it.

Another outfit showing my love for the Loft.  I got these jeans for $4.  Not kidding.  They were on the sale rack, and fit like a dream!  They were a bit long, but nothing a little double sided garment tape can't fix til I can take them to the tailor.  I normally only wear skinny jeans, but it was fun to try something new.

I will love this top a lot more once I get a tan, but I love the soft peach color and the ruffles at the neckline.

And long jeans called for tall heels.  This was my January pair from ShoeDazzle, and I love the straps and the neutral color.  I can tell I'll get a lot of wear out of them this spring.

Jeans:  Loft Modern Flare.  Top: Loft Petal Bib.  Shoes:  ShoeDazzle.

Trench with Ruffle Collar

I LOVE this coat.  Its the perfect weight for spring, and the perfect color, and the little ruffle collar just makes me want to dance :)

And, I'm wearing my new Loft Petite Modern Skinny jeans.  I cuffed them a bit higher since its wet and rainy out, but I love the way they fit.

A close up of the ruffle collar.  LOVE it!  (And an attempt to smile more in pictures!)

Also loving these new shoes - very Chanel-esq.

Coat:  Loft Ruffle Collar Trench.  Jeans: Loft Petite Modern Skinny Rinse Wash.  Shoes:  Steve Madden.  Underneath - plain black tee from Old Navy.

Ann Taylor Loft Spring Style Event

As you have probably figured out, I LOVE the Loft.  So of course I had this date on my calendar - 30% of all full price items?  Yes, please!

I got the trench with the ruffle collar.  It isn't on their website, but looks similar to this, only longer.

The Petal  Bib Top:

The Beaded Circle Tee, only mine is more of a yellowish cream:

The Rosette Cami, only mine is black (I wish I'd seen it in gray!)

The Tiered Shell, only mine is a deep purple:

The Modern Slim Rinse Wash jeans:

And a pair of Petite Modern Skinny Rinse Wash jeans - they hit right at my ankle, and are much cuter than on the model!

I will be doing some outfit posts to show them off a bit.  Love that store - and, thanks to the sales event, saved $129 on all of the above - not bad!

New 'do for the dog

Remember this little guy?

Well, he got a haircut.

And he is truly the perfect Bichon - he looks so much like my girl, Holly, that we started calling him Mister Holly, ha.  He is in LOVE with our girl Kimchi.  He follows her around everywhere, always wants to be next to her, and absolutely HOWLS if you pick her up.  It is the funniest thing!!

They all look so alike and adorable, I had to take some pictures -

Glowing devil eyes:

All the babies:

Kimchi is such a freakishly huge baby!

No one paying attention to me, like always.

Sigh.  I think this will be the best I can do.

Because Daddy just asked who wanted to go "outside" (the magic word in our house!) and I lost my subjects.  Oh well.

I'm back! (and a delish Salmon recipe)

I'm sorry I have been so MIA - life has been crazy!  With the birth of my nephew on Monday, and visiting him in the NICU last week, to our best friend Joe and his wife having their first son on Friday - so much baby love, so many blessed families, and one blogger too busy to spend 5 minutes at a computer :)

I may have mentioned this, but Tyler works nights.  He's been doing some form of shift work for years, and we're pretty used to it.  As much as I'd prefer spending the evenings with him, I'm used to it, and I get a lot down around the house with so much downtime.  But lately, I'm actually going a week or so at a time with only a "hi/bye".  Friday night he was off work for once, and to celebrate, I thought I'd make a nice dinner.  Since its Friday, that meant fish, and our go-to favorite is Salmon.

I thought I'd make it fun and sit in our dining room.  We never do that, and I thought it was quite fun!  Especially since that is one of my favorite rooms in the house :)

For dinner, I turned to The Pioneer Woman for help.  Sure enough, she had a perfect fish recipe.  Everything of hers that I touch is amazing.  I wish she would come live with me.

Her full recipe is here, I've typed it with my changes below:

Bronzed Salmon with Lemon Shallot Butter

Ingredients
  • Two 6oz Atlantic salmon fillets
  • 6 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1 whole large shallot, Minced
  • 1 whole Lemon, Zested And Juiced
  • 3 Tablespoons Canola Oil
  • Kosher Salt And Fresh Ground Pepper, to taste
Preparation Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Season both sides of the fish generously with salt and pepper.
Heat canola oil in a medium-sized oven-safe pan over high heat for a few minutes to let the oil get nice and hot.
Once the oil has heated up for a couple of minutes, drop the sea bass into place and let it sit there untouched for two minutes. (Don’t overcrowd the pan, as this will kill our ability to create a tasty crust on the fish.) Sear over high heat for 2 minutes, then transfer the pan into the 375-degree oven WITHOUT FLIPPING THE FISH OVER. Set the timer to 8 minutes.
Meanwhile, begin making the lemon shallot butter sauce. Melting the butter over a medium-high heat. Add in the minced shallot and lemon zest. Cook over medium-high heat for a couple of minutes.
When the shallots have become a little softer, squeeze in the juice of 1 lemon. Whisk together and reduce the heat to medium until you’ve got an incredible-smelling sauce. (Skipping the shallots in this process will make a super-simple lemon butter sauce.)
Once the fish has been in the oven for 8 minutes, remove it and let it rest for a moment before serving.

My sauce looks NOTHING like hers.  But still tasted amazing!
