I work from home, and while it would be easy to slip into the yoga pants and messy bun routine, I find that I'm more productive when I pull myself together a little bit. Not to mention, I like being able to answer the door for the UPS guy or run out to drop off/pick up Guinevere from daycare and feel confident when I chat with other adults. But especially in the mornings, I don't have the time to spend a lot of time looking presentable, and so I've mastered the One Minute Makeup routine.
Before I show you my routine, there are three things that I HIGHLY recommend that busy mamas look into, that really have helped me look more polished in less time -
- Skincare
- Eyelash extensions
- Brow maintenance
Skincare is a big one - it is one of the first things people will notice about you! I had horrible acne as a teenager - several bouts of Accutane, every "cycline" on the market, Retin A, the works. I've recently had minor breakouts again, and while I'd been spending a lot of extra time in the mornings using cover up and heavy foundation, I finally made a dermatologist appointment and they put me on Minocycline. I have no idea why I waited so long to visit a doctor but I am SO glad I finally did - it is much faster to take a pill in the morning with my daily vitamin than slap on layers and layers of makeup. Even if you think you have mild to moderate skin issues, I highly recommend consulting a professional to see what options may be available to you.
Eyelash extensions are a new one for me, but I am already OBSESSED, and I have a post coming up soon about them ;) They are basically instant mascara and light top eyeliner (thanks to the extra thickness at the base of my eyelashes) and I wake up looking instantly bright-eyed, plus they last for several weeks.
Brow maintenance is another easy one. I like to get waxes at the nail salon and they take less than ten minutes for under $10.
So, knowing that I put in a little bit of extra up front effort in those three areas, I am truly left with just a one minute routine to get out the door in the morning.
First step - BB Cream. I've tried dozens of brands, and I LOVE Smashbox. It moisturizes, primes, has SPF, and has a really good tinted color to it that evens out my skin tone. I squirt a dollop on each cheek and rub it in all over my face.
Second step - eyeliner pencil. Since my eyelash extensions already do all the work on my top lid, I just do one quick swipe the pencil along the bottom lash of each eye. My favorite eyeliner pencil is Urban Decay 24/7 - it is the perfect smudge-y, creamy-y black liner.
Third step - a two-in-one lip and cheek stain. I have two that I like - one from e.l.f, and one from Stainiac. I blot a dot on each of my cheek bones, quickly rub it in, then use my finger that I rubbed it in my cheeks with, to add color to my lips.
Done! It seriously takes me just a minute to do all three steps and not feel the need to hide under sunglasses from the other parents at daycare ;) My favorite part about this routine is that it is an excellent "base face" if I have more time in the afternoon to touch up before heading out - I can build on this look to add eyeshadow, brow liner, mascara and lipstick to get an even more complete look.

Great advice from one busy mom to another! Thanks! Happy Monday! And, by the way, you are gorgeous. :o)
ReplyDeleteYou are too sweet :) thanks friend!!
DeleteBB Cream and Staniac are my FAVORITE!
ReplyDeleteI currently use Maybelline, I will have to try the smashbox one
I haven't tried Maybelline, I'll have to pick that one up - I always prefer drugstore versions if I can find one that works!! But yes, Smashbox is the best I'd found so far! You can try it at Ulta or Sephora for a no-commitment test to see if you like it ;)
DeleteEyebrows are key -- thank you for pointing that out. I don't think enough people understand that!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, again, I love this. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite blogs, just so you know.
XO.
Aw, thank you!! You just made my day :) And glad you agree about eyebrows - they are always so noticeable to me ;)
DeleteOhh good tips - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove your curls! I want eyelash extensions. I have heard some say though that they make your real eyelashes fall out when the extensions come out. Has this happened to you? Also have you tried getting your eyebrows threaded instead of waxed? I have done it twice but I'm not really sure if I think it last longer or is the same.
ReplyDeleteHm, its hard to say which is which. I lose a LOT of eyelashes, and I don't think I have lost any more than normal, but its definitely more obvious when it falls out and there is an extension attached to it! Because eyelashes cycle out pretty fast, you do need to get fills every 2 weeks if you want to keep that full look, but its definitely nice for a special occasion, like weekend in Vegas, a cruise, etc etc.
DeleteI have not tried threading - I was worried it would hurt more than waxing? What did you think? I should probaby try it!
Great advice! I almost never go "naked" on my face, even when I am just at home. I have to "get ready" so that I can be productive during the day!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear I'm not the only one!! I definitely am more alert and ready for the day with make up on - funny how such a little thing can get you in the right mindset!
DeleteI too cannot leave the house without something on my face! I haven't found a BB cream that I love yet, and now I wish Smashbox was more easily accessible to me here in Australia. You look gorgeous, thanks for the post!
ReplyDeleteVery similar to my current "work" from home situation! I also feel that I am more productive when I get ready in the morning just like I would if I was going to an in-office job. I haven't tried the Smashbox BB cream, although I love their Photofinish. My drugstore brand is the Garnier one and then I have the Jouer tinted moisturizer which is basically a BB cream. The Jouer is dewier and I use it when I want to be fancy since it's more expensive than the Garnier. I also love my Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners! I also have Stainiac, but I prefer powder blush personally.
ReplyDeleteyour routine is so close to mine! except I moisturize with spf and just use under eye concealer, lip/cheek stain and mascara. If I have time I'll line my eye;)
ReplyDeleteI need to know where you got your eyelash extensions done around here. I want them. Very much.
ReplyDeleteCheek stain is my favorite thing in the world. I have one from Tarte I've been using for years. I won't leave my house without it, eyeliner, and mascara. Gotta look pretty, no matter what.
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to pin for future reference :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I follow somewhat the same quick routine! Except I use a little bit of bronzer instead of lip/cheek stain. I may have to look into it! Pinning it!
